I felt my feet lock onto the carapace, the effect reinforcing Ariana's spider techniques that had already made movement relatively secure.

Up ahead, a ragged cliff wall loomed—so vast and tall that mist obscured its upper reaches. Our centipede didn't slow. It slammed into the vertical surface and immediately began climbing, its countless legs finding purchase on the sheer rock face.

I crouched instinctively but found I could stand normally despite the vertical orientation. My toned muscles tensed, my core engaging to keep me upright as my feet remained locked to the carapace. Weeks of training had given me strength that wasn't showy, but was deeply functional—perfect for situations like this.

As we ascended, eerie sounds echoed all around—moans, growls, clicking noises that made my skin crawl. I turned to look back the way we'd come and felt my stomach drop.

Three more giants pushed through the fog, stomping toward the cliff, their massive hands already reaching for handholds. Not only that, but swarms of bat-like creatures descended, carrying Voidlings in their claws. Several dropped onto our centipede, some slipping but others finding purchase.

"Archlords! Defensive formation at the rear!" I shouted. "Heralds! Flank the sides! Don't let them surround us!"

Most obeyed instantly, moving to their assigned positions. A few archlords sneered, ignoring my command, holding their position near the centipede's head. Seconds later, a swarm of smaller creatures descended on them.

I ran toward the approaching Voidlings, my scythe ready. But as I closed the distance, I found myself hesitating. Their eyes—those black pits—held something familiar now that I was looking for it. A consciousness.

Without thinking, I raised my right arm, the one marred by Vlindakh's crse marks. The nearest Voidling's eyes widened in recognition. It reared back, body language shifting from aggression to…was that fear? Reverence?

I stood frozen, transfixed by this reaction, unable to bring myself to attack. A herald swooped past, unleashing a blast of energy that tore the Voidling apart. Black mist billowed where it had stood, and something inside me ached.

The wind whipped fiercer as our centipede climbed faster, higher. I glanced back again to see the three giants scaling the cliff with terrifying speed, their massive hands finding holds where no normal creature could.

I needed to protect everyone. Yet now, knowing all these creatures weren't simply monsters but beings with consciousness, possibly former humans…how could I slaughter them without hesitation?

I staggered along the centipede's back, exhaustion weighing on me. My burnout gauge was slowly dropping, the crown replenishing my energy as I breathed deeply, centering myself. My meditation skill helped me maintain focus, my MP gradually restoring.

And I could only hope it would be enough for whatever came.
